Who Is Ash Sutton?
Ashley John Sutton is a British racing driver who has won the British Touring Car Championship four times, equalling the record held by Andy Rouse and Colin Turkington. He was born in Bishop’s Stortford on 15 January 1994 and karted from 2000 to 2009.
His career nearly ended before it started. A road accident cost him two and a half years out of racing. He returned in the 2014 British Formula Ford Championship, finished third, and won the Renault Clio Cup the following year with backing from the BTCC team BMR.
He reached the BTCC in 2016 and won in his rookie season, taking a wet race at Croft in an MG6 and the Jack Sears Trophy for the leading newcomer. A year later he was champion: six wins in the Adrian Flux Subaru, the title settled in the last race of the year, and the youngest BTCC champion since John Fitzpatrick in 1966.
The other three titles came with two more manufacturers. Back-to-back championships in 2020 and 2021 in the Laser Tools Infiniti Q50, then a fourth in 2023 with NAPA Racing’s Ford Focus — twelve wins that season, a share of the record for the most in a single BTCC year. He leads the 2026 championship as it runs.
