Who Is Jamie Whincup?
Jamie Whincup holds the two biggest records in Australian touring car racing. Seven championships and 125 race wins are both more than anyone else has managed, along with 240 podium finishes and 92 pole positions. He was born in Melbourne in 1983 and has spent almost all of his career with Triple Eight Race Engineering.
It began badly. Garry Rogers Motorsport gave him his first drive in 2002 and dropped him after 2003; a single round with Perkins Engineering in 2004 left him 50th. Tasman Motorsport took him on for 2005, he finished second at Bathurst, and Triple Eight signed him for 2006.
Then he won Bathurst three years running with Craig Lowndes. The first, in 2006, came weeks after Peter Brock’s death and was the first Bathurst 1000 decided for the Peter Brock Trophy. Whincup won his first championship in 2008, a second in 2009, and four in a row from 2011 to 2014.
The seventh came in 2017 and was his last. He stopped driving full-time after 2021, became team principal at Triple Eight, and still shares the number 88 car in the endurance races. He entered the Supercars Hall of Fame in 2021 and the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame in 2026.
