Jim Koehler: Full Biography

Jim Koehler is an American monster truck owner and driver from Columbus, Michigan. He built the Avenger monster truck in 1997 and has driven it ever since, winning the Monster Jam World Finals freestyle championship in 2003 and 2011.

Avenger He built the truck himself, which he has called one of the things he is proudest of. The first Avenger ran a forest green Chevrolet S10 body on a teal chassis; the 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air body that the truck is known for came later. Avenger is the lead truck of Team Scream Racing, the operation Koehler founded, which also runs Brutus, Mega-Bite and others.

Mr. Excitement The nickname came from fellow driver Scott Douglass and stuck because of how he drives. He took the World Finals freestyle title in 2003, the first driver to win it who was not called Dennis Anderson or Tom Meents, and Monster Jam has given him the Extreme Air award seven times.

Every Finals A second freestyle championship followed in 2011, won on a tie-break against Cam McQueen. He won the freestyle title at the Australian finals in 2009 and again in 2010. He has raced at every Monster Jam World Finals held, and in 2025 he was inducted into the International Monster Truck Hall of Fame.

Chapter 01

Avenger

He built the truck himself in 1997 and has driven nothing else since, which is unusual in a sport where drivers move between rides. The first Avenger carried a forest green Chevrolet S10 body on a teal chassis. The 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air shell that the truck is now known for came later, and it has appeared in a long run of liveries since, from chrome and toxic green to a white World Finals scheme. Avenger anchors Team Scream Racing, the operation Koehler founded, alongside Brutus, Mega-Bite and the rest of the stable.

Chapter 02

Mr. Excitement

The nickname came from Scott Douglass and it describes a way of driving rather than a persona. In 2003 he won the Monster Jam World Finals freestyle championship, and the significance was not only the trophy: he was the first driver to win freestyle at the World Finals who was not Dennis Anderson or Tom Meents. Monster Jam's Extreme Air award has gone to him seven times, in each year from 2012 to 2017 and again in 2022, and he has been named Sportsman of the Year four times.

Chapter 03

Every Finals

A second freestyle championship came in 2011, decided on a tie-break against Cam McQueen in the Nitro Circus truck, which put him among a very small group of drivers with more than one World Finals freestyle title. He took the freestyle championship at the Australian finals in 2009 and defended it in 2010. What sets the record apart is the attendance: he has raced at every Monster Jam World Finals that has been held, a run no other driver has matched now that Tom Meents has retired. He was inducted into the International Monster Truck Hall of Fame in 2025 and is still competing.
