Joan Mir Mayrata is a Spanish Grand Prix motorcycle racer, born on 1 September 1997 in Palma de Mallorca. He rides the number 36 for Honda HRC Castrol and is the 2020 MotoGP World Champion.

He arrived through the Red Bull Rookies Cup and the FIM CEV series, making his Grand Prix debut at Phillip Island in 2015 as an injury replacement. Leopard Racing signed him for 2016, where he was Rookie of the Year, and in 2017 he took ten wins to become Moto3 world champion, sealing it at the same Phillip Island circuit where he had debuted two years earlier.

One season in Moto2 with EG 0,0 Marc VDS alongside Álex Márquez brought four podiums and a second Rookie of the Year award, and a direct route to Team Suzuki Ecstar for 2019.

2020 was his year. After retiring twice in the first three races he became relentlessly consistent, and a maiden victory at the European Grand Prix all but settled the title with two rounds left. He is the fourth Spaniard to win the premier class, the first Suzuki champion since Kenny Roberts Jr in 2000, and the first Moto3 champion to go on and win it. Chapter 01

Ten Wins and a Title

Mir was runner-up in his first Red Bull Rookies Cup season and won three races in 2014 before finishing fourth in the 2015 FIM CEV Moto3 Junior World Championship. His Grand Prix debut came that same year at Phillip Island, standing in for the injured Hiroki Ono. Leopard Racing took him on for 2016, where a first win at the Austrian Grand Prix earned him Rookie of the Year, and in 2017 he was untouchable: ten victories, thirteen podiums and the Moto3 world championship, clinched at Phillip Island where he had made his debut two years before. A single Moto2 season with EG 0,0 Marc VDS followed, bringing four podiums and a second Rookie of the Year award.

Chapter 02

Champion with One Win

His first premier-class season was interrupted by a heavy testing crash at Brno, but ten top-ten finishes marked him out. Then came 2020. He retired twice in the first three races and afterwards barely put a wheel wrong: four podiums in the next five races, then podiums in both Aragón rounds to take the championship lead. His maiden MotoGP victory arrived at the European Grand Prix, ahead of Álex Rins and Pol Espargaró, all but sealing the title with two rounds to run; seventh place at Valencia the following weekend confirmed it. He remains the first Moto3 world champion to win the premier class, the first Suzuki champion since Kenny Roberts Jr in 2000, and the second Mallorcan after Jorge Lorenzo. Third overall followed in 2021 before Suzuki withdrew from the championship.

Chapter 03

The Honda Years

Repsol Honda was a hard place to be. Crashes, injuries and an uncompetitive bike limited Mir to twenty-second in 2023, with fifth in India his best result, and twenty-first in 2024 with a best Sunday finish of eleventh. Signs of recovery came in 2025 as the Honda improved: two podiums and fifteenth overall, though thirteen Sunday retirements told their own story. In July 2026 it was announced that he would leave Honda after four seasons to join BK8 Gresini Racing on Ducati machinery for 2027, alongside the rookie Daniel Holgado.
