Kalle Rovanperä (born 1 October 2000) is a Finnish rally driver who won the World Rally Championship in 2022 and 2023. He took the first title at twenty-two years and one day old, the youngest champion in the sport's history. Kalle Rovanperä is a Finnish rally driver who won the World Rally Championship in 2022 and 2023. He took the first of those titles at the age of twenty-two years and one day, the youngest champion in the history of the championship.

Latvia He is the son of the WRC driver Harri Rovanperä, and footage of him driving a rally car at eight years old drew international attention. Finnish licensing rules kept him out of competition at home, so he went to Latvia, where a driving licence is not a requirement, and won the national championship outright in 2016 at sixteen.

Toyota He made his WRC debut at Wales Rally GB in 2017, won the World Rally Championship-2 Pro title with Škoda in 2019, and was promoted to Toyota’s works team for 2020. He was the youngest driver ever to stand on a WRC podium at his second start in the top class, and the youngest to win an event at Rally Estonia in 2021.

Two Titles, Then Out The Rally1 hybrid regulations arrived in 2022 and he won five of the first seven rounds, sealing the championship in New Zealand. He defended it in 2023, cut back to a part season in 2024, and returned full-time in 2025 to take a first home win at Rally Finland — the fastest rally victory in WRC history. He left rallying at the end of that season with 18 wins and 30 podiums from 86 starts.

Chapter 01

Latvia, Because Finland Would Not Let Him

He grew up around it: his father Harri won a world championship rally in Sweden in 2001, and footage of Kalle driving a rally car at eight years old drew attention well outside Finland. He entered his first rally at ten, but Finnish rules meant he could not compete at home without a road licence, so at fourteen he went to Latvia, where one is not required. He won the R2 class there in 2015 and the championship outright in 2016 at the age of sixteen, which made him the youngest driver ever to win a national open-class rally championship in any country. Finland's motorsport association granted him special permission in January 2017; the WRC debut followed at Wales Rally GB once he had his licence, and two seasons with Škoda ended in the World Rally Championship-2 Pro title.

Chapter 02

Youngest Ever

Toyota put him in a works Yaris for 2020 alongside Sébastien Ogier, and he was third at Rally Sweden on only his second start in the top class — the youngest driver ever to finish on a WRC podium. The first win came at Rally Estonia in 2021 at twenty years and 290 days, taking the record from Jari-Matti Latvala, who by then was his team principal. When the Rally1 hybrid regulations arrived in 2022 he won five of the first seven rounds, and a sixth win at Rally New Zealand, the day after his twenty-second birthday, made him World Rally Champion at twenty-two years and one day. Colin McRae had held that record since 1995 at twenty-seven. He defended the title in 2023 with a season in which he finished all but one of the thirteen events inside the top four.

Chapter 03

Ouninpohja, and the Fastest Win in WRC History

He cut back to a part-season in 2024 and still won four times from seven starts, but Rally Finland ended with him crashing out of the lead on the penultimate stage after hitting a rock. A year later he led the same rally from the first forest stage, carried a lead of 36.1 seconds into the final day, and went quickest on the second run through Ouninpohja for his tenth stage win of the weekend, adding the Power Stage and Super Sunday for a maximum 35 points. The winning average speed of 129.9 km/h was the fastest in the history of the World Rally Championship, and Toyota filled the top five places — something only Lancia had done before, in Portugal in 1990. In October he announced he was leaving rallying for circuit racing, and finished the season third.
