Who Is Shane van Gisbergen?

Shane van Gisbergen, born 9 May 1989 in Auckland, is a New Zealand racing driver who won three Supercars championships, in 2016, 2021 and 2022, and three Bathurst 1000s. He moved to NASCAR in 2023 and won the Cup Series race at Chicago on debut, the first driver to do that since 1963.

Who Is Shane van Gisbergen?

Shane Robert van Gisbergen is a New Zealand racing driver who won three Supercars championships and three Bathurst 1000s, and now races in the NASCAR Cup Series. He was born in Auckland on 9 May 1989 and came up through motocross, quarter midgets and karts before winning the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship in 2005–06.

He was 18 when he started his first Supercars race, for Team Kiwi Racing in 2007 — the 200th driver ever to start one. Five seasons at Stone Brothers Racing followed, then three at Tekno Autosports, where he finished runner-up in the championship in 2014.

2016 was the year everything arrived at once. He joined Triple Eight alongside Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes, won the Supercars championship, won the Bathurst 12 Hour in a McLaren — the first for the marque — and took the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup. Two more Supercars titles came in 2021 and 2022, and Bathurst 1000 wins in 2020, 2022 and 2023.

Then he moved to America and won on debut. Driving Trackhouse Racing’s Project 91 entry at the Chicago Street Course in July 2023, he won the first NASCAR Cup Series race he had ever started — the first driver to do that since 1963. He was NASCAR Cup Rookie of the Year in 2025 and is in his second full Cup season in 2026.

Chapter 01

The Long Apprenticeship

Van Gisbergen started his first Supercars race for Team Kiwi Racing in 2007, aged 18, and became the 200th driver in the history of the series. Stone Brothers Racing signed him for 2008 and kept him for five seasons; his best was fourth in the championship in 2011. A contested move to Tekno Autosports followed in 2013, and in 2014 he was runner-up in the championship and took his first Bathurst pole. Nine seasons had produced no title.

Chapter 02

Everything In One Year

He joined Triple Eight for 2016 as the third driver alongside Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes, and won the championship at the first attempt with eight race wins. In the same year he won the Bathurst 12 Hour in a Tekno McLaren, the marque's first win in the race, and the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup. He and Alexandre Prémat took the Enduro Cup as the first all-overseas pairing to win it. Two more championships followed in 2021 and 2022, and the Bathurst 1000 in 2020, 2022 and 2023.

Chapter 03

Winning On Debut

In July 2023 Trackhouse Racing put him in its Project 91 car for the inaugural Chicago street race, the first NASCAR Cup Series start of his life. He led from lap 71, survived an overtime restart and won — the first driver to win on Cup debut since 1963, the first New Zealander to win a Cup race, and the first road-course specialist to do it since 1973. He moved to America full-time, won five races and Rookie of the Year in 2025, and added Watkins Glen and Sonoma in 2026.
