Tom Blomqvist: Full Biography

Tom Blomqvist is a racing driver who won the 2022 IMSA SportsCar Championship with Meyer Shank Racing. He has won the 24 Hours of Daytona twice and the 24 Hours of Spa once, and finished second in class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2021. He is the son of Stig Blomqvist, the 1984 World Rally Champion.

Three Passports He was born in Cambridge, moved to New Zealand with his mother after his parents separated and did most of his schooling there, then returned to Europe as his career developed. He holds British, Swedish and New Zealand citizenship, races under the British flag and describes himself as a New Zealander.

Single-Seaters He won the Formula Renault UK championship in 2010 as a sixteen-year-old, and in 2014 finished runner-up in the FIA European Formula 3 Championship, ahead of Max Verstappen and behind Esteban Ocon. BMW then took him into the DTM for three seasons and into GT racing, where he won the 24 Hours of Spa in 2018.

Prototypes With Jota in 2021 he finished second in the WEC’s LMP2 championship and second in class at Le Mans. Meyer Shank signed him for IMSA in 2022 and he won the Rolex 24 at Daytona on his first weekend with the team, won it again the following year, and took the 2022 title. He drives for Acura Meyer Shank Racing as an Acura factory driver.

Chapter 01

The Other Blomqvist

His father Stig Blomqvist won the World Rally Championship in 1984, but the son's route into the sport ran through neither Sweden nor rallying. Born in Cambridge, he moved to New Zealand with his mother when his parents separated and did most of his schooling there, then came back to Europe as the racing became serious — first to Sweden with his father, later to England to live with family friends. He holds three passports, races under the British flag and calls himself a New Zealander. In 2010, at sixteen, he won the Formula Renault UK championship with three wins and twelve podiums from twenty starts. Four years later he finished second in the FIA European Formula 3 Championship with six wins, behind Esteban Ocon and ahead of Max Verstappen, who was nine points further back.

Chapter 02

Prototypes, and Second at Le Mans

BMW took him into the DTM in 2015, where he won on his first season and finished sixth overall in 2016, and into GT racing alongside it: in 2018 he won the 24 Hours of Spa. Three intermittent Formula E seasons ran through the same years, twenty-five starts across three teams without a podium. The prototypes were what stuck. In 2021, sharing a Jota Oreca 07 with Sean Gelael and Stoffel Vandoorne, he finished second in the World Endurance Championship's LMP2 class and second in class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He came back to LMP2 with United Autosports in 2023, alongside Oliver Jarvis and Josh Pierson, and has four Le Mans starts to his name — that 2021 runner-up finish still the best of them.

Chapter 03

America

Meyer Shank Racing signed him for the 2022 IMSA season to share an Acura ARX-05 with Oliver Jarvis. They won the Rolex 24 at Daytona on the opening weekend, won again at Road Atlanta, and took the championship. The following year, in the new Acura ARX-06 in the revived GTP class with Colin Braun, he won the Rolex 24 a second time and added the race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. When Meyer Shank left IMSA for 2024 he moved to full-time IndyCar with the team — eight starts across two seasons, no podiums, and a best championship position of thirtieth — while contesting the Michelin Endurance Cup rounds in the Whelen Cadillac with Pipo Derani and Jack Aitken. He is back at Acura Meyer Shank as an Acura factory driver, and won again in 2025.
