What is Formula 2?
FIA Formula 2 is the second tier of the FIA's single-seater pathway and the direct, final feeder series to Formula 1, organised by the FIA itself. Every team races an identical Dallara chassis, Mecachrome engine and Pirelli tyres, so results reward driver skill over budget. The championship crowns both a Drivers' and a Teams' champion each season.

01 — How it began
How Formula 2 began.
Formula Two traces back to 1948, when the FIA codified it as a smaller, cheaper class beneath Grand Prix machinery. The modern lineage began in 2005 as the GP2 Series, Formula 1’s new feeder series, before being rebranded FIA Formula 2 in 2017.
GP2 launched in 2005 as Formula 3000’s successor, using a spec Dallara chassis and Mecachrome V8 engine. Following Liberty Media’s acquisition of the Formula 1 Group, the FIA revived the historic F2 name in 2017 — Charles Leclerc won the inaugural title. [Source]
Since 2018 the Dallara F2 2018 has run a Halo-equipped, Mecachrome turbo V6, with a redesigned Dallara F2 2024 chassis now carrying the series into its current era.

What makes Formula 2 different?
Formula 2 races the same circuits, the same weekends, as the Formula 1 World Championship.

Practice
A single 45-minute Friday session before qualifying begins.
Qualifying
A 30-minute session sets the Feature Race grid and, reversed, the top-10 pool for the Sprint Race.
Sprint & Feature
Saturday's Sprint (reversed top-10 grid, no mandatory stop) and Sunday's Feature (straight grid, mandatory pit stop) pay a combined 39 points per weekend.

Bonus points
- +2 points for pole position (Feature Race grid).
- +1 point for fastest lap, only if that driver finishes in the top 10 (either race).
- Maximum possible in one weekend: 39 points for a driver, 65 for a team.
- Team points combine the results of both cars.
The Sprint Race grid is the reverse of the top 10 qualifiers; the Feature Race uses the straight qualifying order.
