What Is Aprilia Racing?

Aprilia Racing is the works motorcycle racing operation of Aprilia, based at Scorzè in Veneto and led by Massimo Rivola. Its record is unlike any other manufacturer on the MotoGP grid.

In the smaller Grand Prix classes Aprilia was close to unbeatable. It won ten 125cc riders’ championships between 1992 and 2011 and nine in 250cc between 1994 and 2007 — nineteen world titles, with riders including Max Biaggi, Valentino Rossi, Loris Capirossi and Tetsuya Harada.

The premier class has been harder. Aprilia returned as a works MotoGP team in 2015 with the RS-GP and has taken race wins and podiums, but no riders’ championship. That is the one thing missing from an otherwise remarkable record.

Era 01 · 1992—2007

The Smaller Classes

Aprilia built its reputation on 125cc and 250cc Grand Prix racing, where it won nineteen riders' championships. Max Biaggi took four consecutive 250cc titles from 1994, and Valentino Rossi won the 125cc championship in 1997 and the 250cc in 1999 on Aprilias.

No manufacturer has a stronger record in those classes. It is also why so much of this collection is 250cc rather than MotoGP.

Era 02 · 2015—2021

The Works Return

Aprilia came back to the premier class as a works team in 2015 with the RS-GP. The early seasons were about learning a category that had moved on a long way since the two-stroke era.

Results came slowly, and the bike was rebuilt more than once.

Wins, Not Yet a Title

The RS-GP became a race winner and a regular podium contender, and Aprilia now runs a satellite team alongside the works entry.

The premier-class riders' championship is still the gap in the record. Everything on this page other than that has already been won.
