What Is Porsche at Le Mans?

No manufacturer has won the 24 Hours of Le Mans more often than Porsche. The record stands at nineteen overall victories, the first in 1970 and the most recent in 2017.

Fourteen of those were entered by Porsche under one name or another — Porsche KG Salzburg in 1970, Martini Racing Porsche System in the 936 years, Rothmans Porsche through the 956 and 962 era, Porsche AG with the 911 GT1 in 1998, and Porsche Team and Porsche LMP Team with the 919 Hybrid from 2015 to 2017.

The other five went to customer teams running Porsche cars: Martini Racing Team in 1971, and Joest Racing in 1984, 1985, 1996 and 1997. They count for the marque, which is why the figure is nineteen, but they were not Porsche entries. Porsche returned to the top class in 2023 with the 963, run by Porsche Penske Motorsport.

Era 01 · 1970—1979

The 917 and the 936

Porsche won Le Mans outright for the first time in 1970, Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood taking a 917 entered by Porsche KG Salzburg. The 936 followed and won in 1976 and 1977 in Martini colours.

The privateers were winning in Porsches too — Kremer's 935 took 1979 — which is where the gap between the marque's nineteen and Porsche's own fourteen begins.

Era 02 · 1981—1998

Rothmans, and the 956

The 956 and its 962 successor made Porsche close to unbeatable in Group C. Rothmans Porsche won in 1982, 1983, 1986 and 1987, and customer 956s in Joest's hands took 1984 and 1985.

The 911 GT1 won in 1998, and then Porsche left the top class for fifteen years.

Era 03 · 2014—

The 919 and the 963

Porsche came back to the top category in 2014 with the 919 Hybrid and won three years running, from 2015 to 2017, before withdrawing again.

The 963 arrived for the Hypercar era in 2023, run by Porsche Penske Motorsport — the programme most of this collection is drawn from.
